Financial Strain on the Families of the Handicapped

Learning disabilities and mental handicaps often develop at a young age or are caused by injuries during one's youth. Once a mentally handicapped or learning disabled person reaches young-adulthood, their ability to handle basic life skills often reaches a point at which improvement is no longer seen and dependence on others can be necessary just to complete activities of daily living.

Family members are frequently relied upon to support and care for the handicapped individual which can lead to a financial strain upon the family. There are options for financial support through Social Security to ease this burden. A person with handicaps could be entitled to Supplemental Security Income (SSI), a welfare based system, or if Social Security finds that the person was disabled before age 22, they may eventually qualify for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits under their parents' work record. Benefits may be attainable even if the handicapped person is working in an accommodated setting.
